APPLE STORAGE TIPS
- Each variety of apples has its own characteristics. Some varieties will stay crisp and retain flavor longer than others. However, proper storage will enhance the shelf life of all varieties.
- Avoid storing apples with bananas or tomatoes. The ethylene gas that these fruits naturally release will cause apples to soften.
- Keep refrigerated or store in a location as cool as possible. Although refrigerators are a good temperature, they are low in humidity and will tend to dry apples out. This can be avoided by keeping apples in a perforated plastic bag.
- If storing apples in an unheated shed or basement, leave them in a cardboard box and ensure that it is out of direct sunlight.
- Apples bruise easily so always handles them gently. Even small bruises will shorten storage life and can cause fruit decay.
