Our Specialty is Apples
Davison
Orchards has become known for our wide selection of outstanding dessert
apples. Beginning in July, summer varieties are tart and tangy. Our
customers look forward to that crisp fresh taste.
September
marks the beginning of the fall apple harvesting season. These later
varieties have the distinction of crisper texture, higher sugar content
and longer storage/shelf life than their summer cousins. Our sunny
southern slopes and cool, crisp nights give each one their own distinct
texture and flavour. Whether you purchase them fresh for a crisp healthy
snack or enjoy them blended together in our fresh pressed apple juice,
you'll know they were grown with pride by the Davison family!
The many varieties of apples that we grow:
Transparents - Harvest Date: Late July
Our first apple to be
harvested. These early apples have a very tart flavour and short storage life.
They are outstanding for pies!
Sunrise - Harvest Date: Early August
Our most popular summer apple. Ripens in early August with wonderful flavour. Not a long keeping apple but crisp and juicy right off the tree!
Summer Red - Harvest Date: Mid August
This is an attractive apple with good
flavour. Slightly tart and surprisingly crisp for a summer apple - good for baking.
Ginger
Gold - Harvest Date: Late August
A large size early Golden
Delicious cross. Ripening in late August with unique flavour, very crisp and flavourful for fresh
eating. Great for baking.
Sinta - Harvest Date: Late August
Another Golden Delicious cross. This
one developed in British Columbia. This medium sized blushing Golden is
good for pies and outstanding in apple sauce.
McIntosh - Harvest Date: Early September
The old time Canadian Favourite.
Discovered in Ontario in 1820 makes this the oldest commercial variety
that we are growing today. This distinctive sweet/tart flavour keeps this
a popular choice for our customers.
Grandslam Gala - Harvest Date: Late August
With bright red colour and extra crispness, Grandslam Gala is a Davison Original.
Royal Gala - Harvest Date: Early September
This relative new comer from New
Zealand has taken the apple world by storm. Distinctive with its
orange/red stripy colour and unique flavour. We grow them crisp and sweet!
Arlet - Harvest Date: Early September
This is a Davison Orchards
exclusive - imported from Switzerland, a cross with Ida Red and Golden
Delicious. It seems especially well suited to our warm location,
developing great colour and sweetness to go along with its outstanding
flavour. Our cool nights at harvest enhance its natural crispness making "Arlet"
one of our best storage apples. You'll love it!
Honey
Crisp - Harvest Date: Mid September
Our newest planted
variety. This exciting apple holds all the promise of its name, sweet and
snappy - you'll want to sample this one! (quantities limited)
Empire - Harvest Date: Mid September
A crisp, juicy apple originating in
1966 from New York State. It is a McIntosh and Red Delicious cross and is
excellent for fresh eating and cooking.
Golden
Delicious - Harvest Date: Mid September
Originally discovered
in Virginia in 1916. Davison Orchards has become known for their "smoothie
strain" Goldens which, unlike the supermarket Goldens, we tree ripen. This
allows them to develop full flavour and sweetness with very low acidity.
Handle them gently! Goldens have a thin skin and bruise easily.
Spartan - Harvest Date: Mid September
An excellent all purpose apple with
a crisp, snowy white flesh and unusually small core. The Spartan variety
was developed in Summerland, B.C. and is a cross with McIntosh and Newton.
Ambrosia - Harvest Date: Late September
A new variety from British
Columbia. The Ambrosia is crisp and sweet. Very strong reviews from taste
tests. Available in limited supply only.
Red
Delicious - Harvest Date: Early October
A sweet dessert
apple, deep red in colour with five distinctive points at its base. Red
Delicious are popular all over the world and, ironically, are not related
to the Golden Delicious.
Jonagold - Harvest Date: Early October
Developed in New York, Jonagold has
become a European favourite with its outstanding flavour. It's a Golden
Delicious cross with fine textured flesh and large size.
Mutsu - Harvest Date: Mid October
A very large, green skinned, Japanese
apple. A cross with Indu and Golden Delicious. This apple is crisp and
sweet. Mutsu stores well and is great for fresh eating, pies and apple
sauce. A good choice for sharing!
Ida Red - Harvest Date: Mid October
A unique apple that is tart at
harvest but mellows in storage. Ida Red is a cross of Wagner and Jonathon
from the State of Idaho. Our best storing apple and excellent for all
baking purposes.
Fuji - Harvest Date: Late October
Worth the wait! Fujis ripen during
October frosty nights. They are extremely crisp and sweet and their
popularity is soaring! Very strong customer demand for this variety has
meant that we have increased our plantings in 2002!
Granny Smith -Harvest Date: Late October
This super tart and super crisp variety is often found with a red blush when grown on our farm in the North Okanagan.
