Nana’s Old Fashioned Meat Pie
This dish is great with mashed potatoes, asparagus and other seasonal veggies.
You will need:
Approx 3 lbs of roast or lean stewing beef cut in ½ inch cubes
2 tbsp onion soup mix
3 cloves of garlic, chopped
½ tsp ground pepper
2-3 tbsp cooking wine
Directions
- Flour meat and brown in cooking oil in frying pan
- Place meat in casserole dish
- Add 2-3 cups of water to frying pan to remove meat scrapings. (This is where all the good flavor is!) Add onion soup mix, cooking wine, garlic and pepper to water in the pan. Stir slightly and pour over meat in casserole dish.
- Add additional water to casserole dish to just cover the browned meat (if needed)
- Cover and cook in oven, stirring occasionally for approximately 2 hours, or until meat is tender. (Start at 350 and turn down to 325 once simmering)
- Roll out Davison pastry and line pie plate (or casserole dish of choice) with dough. Add cooked, cooled meat to pie plate. Cover with pastry and crimp edges. Make several small slits in upper crust to allow steam to escape.
- Bake at350 until pastry is nicely browned (approx 30-40 min)
- Let cool 10 minutes and serve!
