Pruning is finished and the sweet corn seeds are all organized waiting to be planted. As I write this it is a cold blustery day and we hope the weather will begin to turn so we can transplant our tomatoes, peppers and melons soon. The winter has proved to be a harsh one and did significant damage to our peach trees. We will not know the damage to trees until the blossoms attempt to set. We hope to see everyone here on opening day May 1st.

Christmas was good to us, perhaps too good to those of us here on the farm. Pruning our orchard is exactly what is needed to work off those extra pounds from some great feasts. Though it is still winter everyone is already anticipating warmer temperatures and spring. Coincidently we field a lot of questions when the best time to prune fruit trees is. A home owner can wait until late March or April because then the danger of really cold nights is generally over with and the trees will be saved from excessive winter damage. Since we have over 20,000 fruit trees we start pruning apple trees now because they are hardier and can handle cold tempatures better. We leave the prunes, pears and peaches until last. In December the temperatures dipped way below what is ideal for all the fruit trees in the Okanagan. It is expected there will be some winter damage on the trees but we will not know until late spring when the blossoms are set just what the final result of the extreme cold will be.
