Farmer for a Day

Come on out and get your hands dirty! Kids aged 5-8 are invited to join Linda McVeigh (Davison) to learn what it’s like to be a farmer for day. The kids will meet 3 generations of working farmers as they experience a day of learning, growing and fun. Four full days of farming fun will be offered throughout July and August, so be sure to keep your schedules open!

On May 18th of this year, an enthusiastic group of young farmers spent a day in the blossoms and sunshine at Davison Orchards participating in the first "Farmer for a Day"....a program designed to provide an authentic experience on a real working farm.

The day began with a visit to the barns and animals, followed by a tour of the farm facilities including the apple peeling machines and the juicing room. In the greenhouse, the children potted their own tomato plants to take home.

After lunch, a tractor-train tour of the fields and plantings led to the pumpkin patch, where the eager farmers-in-training did some seeding under the watchful eye of Farmer Tom. Walking along the edges of the farm provided a chance to observe animal trails, bee hives, and learn to identify some of the natural vegetation common to the area.

Because farm life can't be all work and no play, the day was rounded out with a playtime at the Crazy Cow Kid's Corral as well as ice cream to cool off after working so hard in the morning.

"The focus of the May program was planting, and 'springtime-on-the-farm' experience was offered" explains Linda McVeigh, program facilitator. "Our summer programs will reflect the seasonal activities on the farm... ...observing the crops in various stages of growth, irrigation practices, and harvesting in-season produce." Each child attending through July and August will harvest a bag of fruit or vegetables to take home and share with their family. "Many children haven't experienced a vegetable garden in the back yard. To pick produce fresh from the vine or branch connects us to our food in such a basic way."

Our "Farmer for a Day" program is designed for children ages 5-8 and will be held at Davison Orchards four separate times over the summer months. The program dates are July 11th and 25th as well as August 8th and 22nd. Farmer for a Day is pre-registration only and costs $50/child which includes lunch and snacks. This is a full day event for your children and will start in the morning and finish in the afternoon.
