View in browser A Canadian Business Through and Through The other day, a staff member asked me why we don’t have a Canadian maple leaf on our Canadian products. This got me thinking that maybe some of you might be wondering the same thing. Let me take the time to clarify who we are and why we are so proud of the many products we make on our farm, right here in Vernon, BC, Canada.    This year our staff t-shirts have printed on the back: “We are the farmers, the bakers, the preserve and apple juice makers.” What does this mean? Simply this: we are a farm first, growing the vast majority of our produce that we sell and transform. We have a bakery with talented bakers that transform our produce into pies, muffins and more. We have a cannery where we make our preserves, soups and sandwiches with fresh ingredients. Up the road from the main market we have our juice press and packing facility where all of our apples are sorted, packed and some are processed into the fresh-pressed apple juice you know and love.    Did you know we make thousands of jars of preserves all winter long? Every single jar of goodness is handmade, hand-poured and hand-labelled before being packed into boxes, ready to line our shelves in the market when we open in May. We make over fifty different varieties of preserves! These include jams, fruit butters, salsas, relishes, fruit syrups, pepper jellies, chutneys and caramels, all made on our farm in our brick building we call “The Cannery.” After our market closes for the season and the deep cleaning is done, we begin the rewarding job of making these preserves    It takes us most of the winter to complete this job. During the harvest season we freeze as much produce from our fields as we can to use in our preserves. Most other produce we need is locally sourced (e.g. blueberries from BC’s coast). Fruits and vegetables are pulled out of the giant freezers and the production begins. When shopping, look for the cannery label and you will know that they are made RIGHT HERE on our farm.    However, we don’t stop at preserve-making; we also make all of our own Fresh Pressed Apple Juice which has been a customer favourite for years! The juice is made in the fall with apples from our orchard. It is then jugged, hand-labeled, and stored in our walk-in freezers so we can supply our guests all year long. In October, as soon as we have a good mix of apple varieties to blend the flavors, guests may get FRESH juice that has never been frozen as we begin the juice making process. Our juice is sold as is, but is also turned into comfortingly hot spiced apple cider or refreshingly cold Applelanches!    The Farmhouse Bakery is another wonderful source for Canadian products made right here on our farm. Pies, muffins, scones, cookies and more, are made from scratch daily, with local produce (much of it grown by us) and flour milled in Armstrong.    And last but not least our produce! We have over one-hundred acres of tree fruits and vegetable fields, spread over five different locations in Vernon and Armstrong. Over time, as the family and the business have grown, we have adapted and expanded from our original thirty-four acres where the Country Village sits. We are growing a myriad of produce to feed our city and beyond, including apples, peaches, pears, corn, tomatoes, peppers, squash, snap peas, zucchini and much more. Farming and growing food is our passion! So, do I need to put a Canadian maple leaf on our local products? If I did, the market would be a sea of red maple leaves overwhelming your eyes! Yes, we are Canadian and so proud of the products we GROW and MAKE right here for YOU, our faithful customers who visit from near, far and wide.
