The other day, my son John went for a ride in the tractor with Lance. After a while, he asked if he could be let out to go and find me. Lance suggested that he wait until they were at the bottom of the field, but John would have none of it. He insisted on being let out at the farthest possible point from the market. Complying, Lance opened the door: John jumped out of the tractor and started sprinting through the orchard. All of a sudden he stopped dead, shoved his face in-amongst the peach branches and took a huge sniff! Then he took off like a rocket again, only to come to a screeching stop as soon as he reached a blossoming apple tree. Burying his head in the blossoms, he took another long inhale until he was fully satisfied. Then off he trotted to the market to find me, happy and content.
This little anecdote reminded me of the opportunity we have to, quite literally, “breathe in spring.” We are surrounded by blossoms, spring flowers, freshly cut grass and warming soil. Spring is a delight to the senses, but it does take some intentionality to slow down and enjoy our surroundings instead of just rushing through life with our head down; and believe me when I say I am preaching to the choir! To help foster this intent, we invite you to come to our farm to relax and soak up the spring season. We are now open five days a week, Tuesday’s - Saturday’s from 9am - 5:30pm, with Orchard Tours running on Friday’s and Saturday’s from 10am - 4pm.
As a special treat, we are offering FREE family photos in the orchard on Saturday, May 10 from 11am - 2pm! Yes, this is the day before Mother’s Day (hint, hint to all you grateful dads and children out there)! Speaking of Mother’s Day, if you are looking for a special but simple dessert to honour your mom with, may I suggest this Lemony Apple-Rhubarb Crisp? It is so easy to throw together, but the result is a sublime, spring-inspired dessert that will make any loved one feel special.
