Despite the recent heatwave, it’s clear that summer is giving way to autumn. All around us there are subtle signs: leaves are starting to change colour, school buses are once again driving their routes, apples are hanging heavy on the trees.
I am thankful that we live in a climate with four distinct seasons. The changing of seasons gently pushes us into new routines, new menus, new hobbies and new wardrobes. As a person who does not love change, nature’s prompts go a long way to ease me in.
In our household the biggest shift is that all the kids are now school-age. After nearly twelve years of staying home with young children, this is a significant transition! In some ways, I am excited about this new chapter, but there is also a mourning process as a beautiful chapter comes to a close.
At the farm, the signs of the changing seasons are everywhere. Apple harvest is in full swing, and if you would like to try your own hand at picking apples we offer U-pick apples experiences from Wednesday to Sunday every week in September. This week, until Sunday, September 14th, the apples for U-Pick are everybody's favourites: Honeycrisp!
Another fun experience that you don’t want to miss out on is our very popular Make Your Own Mini Apple Pie event, running from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm on Saturdays in September. It’s so fun to see all the kids, as well as some adults, try their hand at making a pie. The look of pride on their faces when they see what they have accomplished is just priceless!
And then of course, there are the pumpkins; we’ve got every size and shape that you can think of. If you are interested in doing some fun exploring around the farm grounds, our seasonal scavenger hunt has now switched over to searching for silly pumpkins! Just grab a clue sheet from the greeter at the market and see how well you can do.
I hope that as your family transitions from summer to fall, whatever that looks like for you, it will be a time of joy and growth as you work, learn and play.
